Cow Ghee Export from India to the UAE

What a UAE importer usually handles before pure cow ghee from Madurai can be sold.

Hasta Foods exports pure cow ghee from Madurai, India, through Hawk Exim. UAE importers can ask for jars from 250ml to 1 litre and larger packs. In the UAE, the importer registers the food product and gets its label approved before the goods arrive. This page explains what that usually involves, so you can plan an order. Tell our export team your port and pack sizes, and they will reply.

Who registers cow ghee for import into the UAE?

The UAE importer, not the exporter, registers the food product and applies for label approval before the goods arrive. The importer needs a valid trade licence, and registration goes through the federal ZAD portal or, in Dubai, Dubai Municipality's FIRS system or the ZADI platform.

  • Several bodies share oversight. Federal ministries set food safety rules and standards, and each emirate's municipality handles port inspection, testing, label approval and release.
  • Each pack size is its own item. Different sizes of the same food are registered separately, so choose the jar sizes before your importer applies.

Hasta Foods does not hold or claim UAE approvals on your behalf. What we can do is answer your importer's product questions, which you can send through the cow ghee exporter page.

What does the UAE label assessment check?

Before entry, the importer applies for a label assessment. It reviews the barcode, trade name, brand, nutrition information, country of origin, shelf life and storage conditions against the UAE labelling standard for prepackaged food, UAE.S GSO 9:2019.

UAE label checklist
LanguageArabic, or Arabic and English with identical information. An Arabic sticker is allowed, but it must be approved beforehand and applied before export, not at entry.
Required detailsProduct name, ingredients, nutrition declaration, net quantity, packer name and address, country of origin, storage conditions and a batch or lot number.
DatesProduction and expiry dates printed once on the original label or primary packaging.

A change to a label, pack, weight or barcode needs a new assessment, so settle these details before the first order. Tell our export team which label language your importer needs, and they will confirm what we can supply. You can see the product details first on the 500ml pure cow ghee page or in the full pure cow ghee range.

What happens when cow ghee reaches the UAE?

Once the product and label are approved, the importer applies for an import request giving the port of entry, airway bill number, arrival date and country of origin. Goods may be inspected on arrival, and the importer pays customs duty to release them.

  • First-time testing in Dubai. A food registering for the first time can be tested in the Dubai Municipality laboratory, and results may take up to five working days.
  • Labels must match the contents. A food whose label leaves out an ingredient or additive that is detected is rejected.
  • English documents are accepted. Import documents in English are accepted without translation.

Most food entering the Gulf Cooperation Council countries from outside is exempt or charged at 5 percent under the GCC Unified Customs Law, but your customs broker should confirm the rate for ghee. Our shipping and delivery policy and terms and conditions set out that importers are responsible for duties and clearance charges unless we agree otherwise in writing.

Does cow ghee need halal certification for the UAE?

Public guidance does not say ghee needs a halal certificate to enter the UAE, but a product that makes a halal claim must follow UAE halal labelling rules. A halal claim needs a certificate from a certification body approved by the UAE, and the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology keeps the list.

The national UAE halal mark is voluntary, but no other halal logo is permitted on products sold in the UAE, so ask your importer how the halal claim should appear on the jar. Halal is listed among our certifications on our website, and our export team can share the certificate details. You can also read about the family and our standards.

Which documents does a UAE shipment need?

UAE guidance names an original commercial invoice addressed to the importer, a certificate of origin approved by a chamber of commerce in the country of origin, a detailed packing list with weight, packing method and HS code, and a bill of entry or airway bill. Food shipments also need a health certificate.

Which health or free-sale certificate suits ghee is something to confirm with your importer first. We can share the Hawk Exim registration certificates and the laboratory report on request, and our export documents guidance explains the rest.

Ask which documents your importer needs

What should a UAE importer confirm before ordering?

Some points depend on the product and the emirate, so confirm them with the municipality or a UAE clearing agent before you place an order. We do not state answers to these, because the public guidance does not settle them for ghee.

  • Certificate of conformity. Whether UAE dairy rules require a certificate of conformity for ghee.
  • Health certificate. Which health or free-sale certificate is needed, and which Indian body issues it.
  • Shelf life on arrival. How much shelf life must remain when the goods reach the UAE.
  • Label wording. Whether ghee needs specific wording or a fat percentage declaration.
  • Fees. The registration and laboratory testing fees.

This page summarises public guidance, including a 2025 report by the US Department of Agriculture on UAE food import rules and the halal page of the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. It is general information, not legal advice, and rules change, so your importer or clearing agent should confirm the current position.
