Who checks cow ghee food safety in the USA?
Under the FDA Foreign Supplier Verification Program, the US importer is the owner or consignee of the food at entry, or the US agent of the foreign owner if there is none. That importer keeps a written plan for each food and each foreign supplier, including a hazard analysis and supplier verification.
- Supplier verification. Options include annual on-site audits for serious hazards, sampling and testing, and a review of the supplier's food safety records.
- Repeated checks. The importer repeats the supplier evaluation at least every three years, or sooner when new information arises.
- Some importers have lighter duties. Very small importers and importers of food from certain small suppliers have modified requirements, and each buyer decides which applies.

What does a US importer check on the cow ghee label?
FDA labelling rules ask for the name of the food on the front of the pack in bold type, and for the required information to be in English. Packaged food must also carry Nutrition Facts unless an exemption applies. Your importer checks the Indian label against these rules before a first order.

Does a cow ghee factory need to register with FDA?
FDA rules require the owner, operator or agent in charge of a foreign facility that makes, packs or holds food for US consumption to register it, unless an exemption applies. The registration must name the facility's US agent and give an emergency contact phone number and email.
- US agent. The registration lists the US agent's name, full address, phone number and email.
- Exemptions exist. Whether one applies to a particular facility is for the facility and its adviser to check against the FDA rules.

What is prior notice for imported cow ghee?
Prior notice tells FDA about each food shipment before it reaches the USA. It must arrive at least 2 hours before arrival by road, 4 hours by rail or air and 8 hours by water, and it cannot be filed more than 30 calendar days ahead through customs systems, or 15 days through the FDA system.
International mail follows a different rule, with notice filed before the item is sent. Share your shipment details early with whoever will file the notice for you. Which pack sizes and papers can Hasta Foods share?
Jars from 250ml to 1 litre, with 5 litre and 15 litre packs by enquiry, each with a 12 month shelf life. Hawk Exim holds IEC, GST and Udyam registrations, and the ghee is tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory. Certificates are shared on request.

What should a US importer confirm with a customs broker?
Some points depend on the product and the entry, so confirm them with a US customs broker before you place an order. We do not state answers to these here, because public guidance does not settle them for ghee.
- Tariff and duty. The tariff line for ghee and the current duty on goods from India.
- Licence or quota. Whether a dairy import licence or tariff-rate quota applies to ghee.
- Milk and ingredient wording. How the label should declare milk and list a single ingredient.
- Nutrition Facts exemption. Whether a small business or low-volume exemption applies.
- State and retailer rules. Any state or retailer requirements, such as extra certificates.
- Indian export papers. Which health or origin documents the shipment needs from the Indian side.
