Cow Ghee Export from India to the UK
What a UK importer usually checks before pure cow ghee from Madurai can enter Great Britain.
Hasta Foods exports pure cow ghee from Madurai, India, through Hawk Exim. UK importers can ask for jars from 250ml to 1 litre and larger packs. This page covers Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. The importer checks the import controls that apply to dairy products and the label before an order is placed. We explain what that usually involves, so you can plan. Tell our export team your port and pack sizes, and they will reply.

Can cow ghee from India enter Great Britain?
Great Britain only accepts dairy products from countries on Defra's list of approved trading partners, and that list also shows the heat treatment required. India is on it as a whole country, but only under Column C, not Columns A or B. Your importer should confirm whether ghee falls under Column C and what it requires.
- Read the current list. The list changes over time, so your importer should check the version Defra publishes now rather than rely on this page.
- Ask what Column C means for ghee. It sets the heat treatment required, so confirm with Defra or a customs broker whether the way ghee is made meets it.
This page does not claim UK approvals for Hasta Foods. What we can do is answer your importer's questions about how the ghee is made, and you can read about that on our manufacturer and supplier page and in our story.
What does a UK importer check on the cow ghee label?
A packaged food label must show the name of the food, a net quantity, any special storage conditions and a business name and address, which can be the importer's. Your importer checks the Indian label against the GOV.UK rules before a first order.
| Name and net quantity | The name of the food, and a net quantity in grams, kilograms, millilitres or litres for packaged food over 5 g or 5 ml. |
|---|---|
| Storage and lot | Any special storage conditions, and a lot number or date where it applies. |
| Business address | The business the food is marketed under, or the business that imported it. Ask your importer which name should appear. |
| Ingredients | A list is required only when there is more than one ingredient. |
| Country of origin | Required for certain foods listed by GOV.UK. Ghee was not named there, so ask your importer whether to show it. |
Tell our export team what your importer needs on the label, and they will confirm what we can supply. You can see the product details first on the 500ml pure cow ghee page or in the full pure cow ghee range.
Which licences and certificates does a UK importer need?
Animal products need licences and certificates before they enter the UK, and businesses importing are expected to check every import control that applies. We do not name the certificate for ghee here, because the public guidance read for this page does not settle it. Your importer or customs broker should confirm it first.
Once your importer knows which certificate suits the shipment and who signs it, tell our export team and they will say what we can supply. Our shipping and delivery policy and terms and conditions set out that importers are responsible for duties and clearance charges unless we agree otherwise in writing.
Which pack sizes and papers can Hasta Foods share?
Jars from 250ml to 1 litre, with 5 litre and 15 litre packs by enquiry, each with a 12 month shelf life. Hawk Exim holds IEC, GST and Udyam registrations, and the ghee is tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory. Certificates are shared on request.
The Hawk Exim registration certificates and the export documents guidance are on our exporter page. For bulk buyers, the export and wholesale page explains how larger orders start.
What should a UK importer confirm with a customs broker?
Some points depend on the product and the entry, so confirm them with a UK customs broker before you place an order. We do not state answers to these here, because the public guidance read for this page does not settle them for ghee.
- Dairy rules for ghee. Whether ghee counts as a dairy product under the approved-country rules.
- Certificate and signatory. Which health certificate applies, which Indian authority signs it, and whether an approved establishment listing is needed.
- Border checks. Which checks apply at the border, who files the pre-notification, and how far ahead.
- Tariff and duty. The UK tariff line for ghee, any quota, and the effect of the India-UK trade agreement.
- Milk and nutrition wording. How the label should declare milk, and whether a nutrition declaration is needed.
- Label language and UK address. Whether English and a UK address are required on the jar.
- Northern Ireland. Different rules apply there, and this page covers Great Britain only.
- Importer registration. Whether the importer must register as a food business and what records it keeps.
This page summarises GOV.UK and Defra guidance, including Defra's list of approved countries for dairy products and the GOV.UK food labelling rules. It is general information, not legal advice, and rules change, so your importer or customs broker should confirm the current position.
